We weren't able to do pool sessions this past winter, so the CWA will be hosting a two day beginner class June 5th & 6th in Yorkville, IL. This class will be taught by ACA certified instructors and it will be limited to nine students.
This class is targeted at those who have never been in a whitewater kayak before or who have not been in a kayak in a long time and need a refresher. The goal is to start by teaching you how to enter and exit a kayak safely, basic strokes and developing an understanding of river currents, and working toward running easy rapids such as the Marge Cline Whitewater Course. The Eskimo roll will be introduced, but it will not be a primary topic.
The CWA has a fleet of kayaks for instructional use. They are mostly Dagger RPMs. They fit most people up to about 225 lbs, we might be able to drum up a larger boat if needed. Use of a boat, paddle, sprayskirt, PFD and helmet are included in the cost.
Students should wear swimming attire along with water shoes or old running shoes. Flip flops and Crocs will not stay on your feet. Please pack a lunch and bring along ample drinking water. We will be close to our cars, so there is no need to pack anything on the river other than a water bottle. If it is chilly, consider synthetic layers such as Under Armor or tights. Cotton clothing drains heat and should be avoided.
